How To Find the Right Therapist for You: Risework Therapy’s Approach to The Perfect Fit

Therapy can be a transformative and healing experience, but it's essential to find a therapist who is the right fit for you. Just like any other relationship, the connection plays a crucial role. Your relationship with your therapist can significantly impact the effectiveness of therapy. But how do you go about finding the right therapist? In this blog post, we will explore five key considerations and steps to help you on your quest to find a therapist who aligns with your needs, goals, and preferences. We will also discuss our process here at Risework Therapy, designed to help you find a therapist who is right for you.

  1. Define Your Concerns and Goals

  2. Consult Your Insurance

  3. Seek Recommendations from Trusted Sources

  4. Schedule a Consultation Call

  5. Prioritize The Connection & Trust Your Instincts

1. Define Your Concerns and Goals

Before you start your search for a therapist, take some time to reflect on your presenting concerns and goals. What brings you to therapy? Understanding what you hope to achieve from therapy will not only help you articulate your needs but also assist you in finding a therapist who specializes in the areas most relevant to you. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or personal growth, knowing your goals is the first step in finding the right therapist.

2. Consult Your Insurance

If you are planning on using health insurance it's essential to understand your benefits. Different insurance plans offer various degrees of coverage for therapy services and may have specific requirements regarding the types of therapists or counsellors you can see. It's a good idea to contact your insurance provider or check their website to learn about the coverage they offer. Keep in mind that some therapists, like those at Risework Therapy, provide flexible sliding scale pricing, making therapy more accessible to those without insurance or with limited coverage.

3. Seek Recommendations from Trusted Sources

Word-of-mouth recommendations can be incredibly valuable when searching for a therapist. Just like being set up on a date, it’s nice to be connected with a therapist by people who know you. Talk to friends, family members, or colleagues who have experience with therapy or counselling. They might be able to recommend a therapist based on their positive experiences. Since trust is a crucial factor in the therapist-client relationship, getting referrals from people you trust can be a reliable way to find a therapist who is likely to be a good fit for you.

4. Schedule a Consultation Call

Many therapists offer free consultation calls for potential new clients. This is a valuable opportunity for you to get a sense of the therapist's approach, personality, and whether you feel comfortable with them. During the consultation call, you can ask questions about their therapeutic style, experience, and how they typically work with clients. This conversation can help you gauge whether the therapist understands your needs and if you feel a connection.

5. Prioritize the Connection and Trust Your Instincts

Finding a therapist is a bit like dating; it's all about finding and building a meaningful connection. Just as in dating, you're seeking someone who understands you, makes you feel comfortable, shares your values, and makes you feel heard.

When choosing a therapist, compatibility matters significantly. Just because a therapist is highly skilled and experienced doesn't mean they are the ideal match for your unique needs and personality. It's perfectly normal to meet therapists who are excellent at what they do but may not align with your specific concerns, communication style, or therapeutic goals. It’s ok that the first therapist you meet with isn’t the right fit for you.

it's essential to trust your instincts and prioritize the sense of connection and understanding. A therapist who may be a perfect fit for one person may not be the right choice for another. Recognizing when a therapist isn't the right fit and having the flexibility to explore other options is a vital part of the therapeutic journey.

Risework Therapy: Your Partner in Finding the Perfect Therapist

Finding the right therapist is a crucial step on your journey to better mental health and well-being. By considering your concerns and goals, consulting your insurance, seeking recommendations, and scheduling consultation calls, you can increase your chances of finding a therapist who is the perfect fit for you.

At Risework Therapy, we believe in the power of a strong therapist-client connection and are committed to ensuring that you find that connection. To achieve this, we have a comprehensive policy in place to guide you through the process.

Step 1: A Personal Connection with Sam, the Clinic Owner

Our process begins with a conversation with Sam, the owner of Risework Therapy. Sam knows each therapist on our team intimately, having a deep understanding of their specializations, therapeutic modalities, approaches, and personalities. During this initial consultation, you'll have the opportunity to share your concerns, goals, and preferences with Sam. This conversation allows Sam to match you with the therapist who aligns best with your unique needs and preferences.

Step 2: Assessment of Fit

After your discussion with Sam, we'll connect you with the therapist we believe is the best match for you. We can book you in for an intake session at that point but, we also understand that you may feel more comfortable with a bit more interaction to determine if your assigned therapist is the right fit. If you're unsure after your initial conversation with Sam, we're more than happy to arrange another brief call with your assigned therapist to further assess compatibility.

Step 3: The First Few Sessions

We recognize that the first few therapy sessions are pivotal in gauging whether the therapist aligns with your needs and expectations. We encourage you to attend a couple of sessions with your assigned therapist to assess whether the therapeutic relationship feels right for you.

Step 4: Flexibility for Your Well-Being

If, after speaking directly with your assigned therapist, or attending a few sessions, you feel that the assigned therapist isn't the best fit for you, don't worry. It's not uncommon for the first therapist you meet with not to be the perfect match! We understand that finding the right fit can take time, and we're here to support you. In such cases, we'll gladly offer to pay for your intake session with another therapist on our team. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that you find a therapist with whom you can build a long-term, productive therapeutic relationship.

At Risework Therapy, we prioritize your well-being and are dedicated to facilitating your journey to better mental health. Our personalized approach, guided by Sam's expertise, ensures that you are matched with a therapist who understands your unique needs and supports your growth and healing.

Remember, therapy is a collaborative effort, and finding the right therapist is an essential part of the process. We're here to help you every step of the way.
